Reading is introduced to students of Hermiston Schools by exploring themes or units. The students begin to understand the basics of reading by listening, and then reading, books about the seasons, animals or plants they study. As students progress through the grades, they continue to use reading as a launching point for education. Books or short stories are used to introduce students to different genres and the elements of stories. They are also used as examples of how to create a story of their own

The Science curriculum at Hermiston Schools begins by showing students how science is a part of the world around them. They are introduced to plants and their needs, different types of weather as well as many other topics. The areas of study become narrower as the students grow. Chalk Talk: Helping Children with Geography

The world can be a large and baffling place for students to conquer. However, the students may be able to succeed with a little help from home. To help their students with geography, parents can try different ideas such as posting a world map on a foam board on a wall in a area that is used frequently. When a child hears about different areas of the world, they can place a pushpin in the map. They can also use this map to help plan a family adventure. Another way to help with geography is to allow student to try the food from different areas of the world. When a family night is coming up, try food from a land that hasn’t been tried by the family. Geocaching is another way to become familiar with the world. By using GPS devices, participants go to specific setting to find a Geocache container that is hidden at the spot. By becoming a member of the Geocaching group, family can spend time together as they explore local areas and learn about navigation. By using these, as well as other, activities, students are able to see the importance of geography in their lives.
