Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hermitage District Curriculum

The Language Arts program in elementary school is literature-based and contains phonics-based reading, writing, spelling, communication, and handwriting. In middle school, the English program uses basal series as well as a variety of novels to teach more advanced programs in reading, writing, and communication, as well as reading in social studies and science. In high school, students are taught research methods as well as reading, writing, and literature.

Math is taught as a stand-alone subject in kindergarten through Grade 12, as well as integrated with science. The primary program through middle school teaches through discovery and math manipulatives, and students have the option of using technology, calculators, and computer science. The Hermitage School District includes an extensive science program, including an award-winning environmental program that has been in existence for almost 30 years.
