Hershey District and Curriculum

Derry Township School District equips students to contribute effectively to society and be ready for life after graduation from grade 12. With this in mind, many courses are offered which not only give a solid educational base, but also provide variety and depth of knowledge to student learning. Core courses also progress in a similar way, offering more and more variety and depth of content as students progress, finally offering AP courses, Honors courses, and regular courses in these subjects so that students can choose the best options for them while receiving a solid educational foundation.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hershey District Curriculum

The elementary curriculum is skills-based and hands-on so that students learn a good amount of content and are able to interact with what they are learning. For instance, in math students use manipulatives to understand patterns, shapes and spatial relations as well as quantitative concepts. Operational ability is emphasized and developing fluency in basic solving problem is a goal of early math learning.

For students in middle school, language courses are offered in both French and Spanish. Once high school is reached, students may choose between French, Spanish, and German and may take courses throughout all of their four high school years. In a similar fashion Music classes are offered; they expand in options and opportunities as students progress in grade level and experience, terminating in high school offerings such as Advanced Placement Music Theory, Concert Choir, String Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, HS Concert Bands and Women’s Choir.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of World Language Courses

In countries like Norway and Germany, English is taught from the first grade on. In the U.S., most language courses begin no earlier than 5th or 6th grade. So what benefits do world language courses contribute to our students? Is it worth putting them into these language classes? Younger students normally have an easier time picking up languages and accents as compared to older students. Not only this, but learning another language and about another people group encourages students to be more accepting of other peoples and cultures. It also encourages good communication skills and the understanding of both verbal and non-verbal communication, as these vary from culture to culture. Beyond these benefits, learning other languages helps and stretches the brain to be able to perform other skills that would otherwise be more difficult, such as critical thinking and creativity, since students are forced to think outside of how they normally would to speak in another language.
