Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hewitt District Curriculum
The science curriculum is designed to introduce students to the world from a different perspective. Students begin by looking at the physical characteristics of item. They then build onto this by looking at the cycles that help to create the item being examined. From here the study of science continues on to look at the molecules and atoms that are included in every item on earth and in the environment. This includes how elements react with other elements.
Social studies introduces students to the history of the world. First, studying rules and laws and how they are formed, whether for the home or for the country. Through this students begin to learn about the input that citizens have in governmental decisions. Students continue to learn about the people to help a government to run effectively. After learning about their own government, students begin to see and compare how their country differs from other governments around the world and then see the pros and cons of the different types of governments.

Chalk Talk: Project-Based Learning
Project-Based Learning is used in many schools across the country. This type of learning present students with open-ended questions which allows them to think in an authentic manner. Students take an active role as they create opposing reporters, or as they measure a school's track so they can then develop one of their own. The projects encourage teamwork, problem solving and critical thinking. Each of which will be of use to students as they go on into college or the career environment. The students are highly engaged in this type of learning as students discover and learn by building on previous learning experiences. Project-Based Learning also fosters the use of authentic assessments that provide a measurement of what students, are able to teach themselves, and can demonstrate to others.
