Highland District and Curriculum

The Highland School District curriculum attempts to give each student worldly knowledge, starting with social studies. Starting in their own backyard, students will learn about their neighborhood, state, and country’s past, present, and future. The goal for each student is to produce an individual who is well read and knowledgeable in many areas. Teachers are provided with a variety of resources and the district provides a wide range of extracurricular opportunities to help students succeed personally.

We currently cover the following Highland-area school district: Highland School District.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Highland District Curriculum

The Highland district curriculum offers each learner an assortment of both mandatory and elective courses to fit each individual and gives them the chance to succeed. The language arts curriculum focuses on a variety of increasingly complex literature and the evaluation of this content. Expansion of vocabulary and the proper use of language in writing will be met in each Highland school. The writing curriculum expands on this by having students put these skills to use in writing that is intended for different purposes.

In high school social studies, the American government will be one focus, as will economics. Additionally, students develop an awareness of other cultures and modes of government. They also conduct independent research, honing the skills of developing a topic and then seeing through the research process. Students learn to understand the historical context of current events, and become able to make more informed decisions.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of Homework

Although homework may not be a favorite activity of students, it provides some undeniable benefits. A student can review and practice what they’ve learned in class while going at their own pace. Homework also improves a student’s ability to work independently, a skill that will be useful after formal education has concluded. General knowledge will increase and academic skills (reading, writing, spelling, abstract knowledge) will improve, along with time management skills and self-discipline. Outside of the classroom, students can also learn to use other resources to assist them in understanding difficult topics. A student can feel a sense of accomplishment after completing and handing in homework assignments. Finally, parents can also take an active role in their child’s learning and be kept up-to-date about their child’s progress. As you can see, homework provides a variety of benefits and improves skills that are helpful in school and outside of the classroom.
