Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Highland Park District Curriculum

In English Language Arts students read primarily nonfiction for comprehension and synthesis. They use a variety of techniques, resources, and technology to gather information. Students collect, organize, analyze, and retain information in order to synthesize it into compelling arguments. The focus is on analytic and persuasive writing and developing research skills as well as vocabulary building.

In Mathematics and Science, students use critical and process-driven thinking, both evaluating and honing strategies to solve problems. The classes focus on implementing key ideas in depth and in context so that students have a solid foundation on which to build. The curriculum uses every available opportunity to apply students’ learning to real-world situations and problems. The curriculum is a rigorous, internationally benchmarked set of standards which is intended to give students comparable educations regardless of location.

Chalk Talk: The Importance of the College Visit

Choosing a college based on its ranking or reputation or even sports franchises without actually setting foot on campus is like buying clothes based on the brand name without trying them on. There are many different colleges that are great for some students and not the right fit for others. This isn’t a strike against the schools; it just means that different people have different tastes. Touring a college campus helps an applicant get a real feel for the tone of the campus. This is something that is hard to gauge without experiencing it. Again and again, students visit a campus and come away feeling like this college is the perfect fit for them; on the other hand, there are tons of students who thought a college was their first choice until they visited it. Imagine if they hadn’t visited and were stuck attending a college they didn’t like?
