Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Highland Park District Curriculum
In addition to receiving sound instruction in the core areas of math, science, language arts and social studies, students participate in classes in health and PE, visual and performing arts, 21st Century life and careers, technology and world languages. Each subject area curriculum meets or exceeds the requirements set forth by the Common Core State Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards, which have set rigorous benchmarks for student learning.
The world languages curriculum was devised to prepare students for communication in our increasingly global society. Students build a foundation of foreign language understanding in elementary school, where they learn basic words and phrases, and begin conversational speaking. In middle school, students advance their understanding by learning how to read and write in their language of choice. High school-aged students acquire the ability to read and write complex passages, deliver lengthy presentations and engage in complex conversations using appropriate pronunciation, grammar and culturally-appropriate gestures.

Chalk Talk: The Benefits of Physical Education
Physical education classes have come to be recognized as a key component of a child’s education, and rightfully so. Aside from the obvious health benefits of taking PE, such as increased muscle strength, coordination and fitness, PE provides students a number of other practical benefits. First, PE teaches children the value of teamwork and sportsmanship. Learning to play team sports and games gives students an opportunity to work together toward a common goal, share in victories together, and when things don’t quite work out, practice good sportsmanship when experiencing defeat. Second, students who are physically active tend to be more confident, have higher self-esteem and exhibit greater self-discipline.
