Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hillsboro District Curriculum
Hillsboro’s high school social studies curriculum includes the study of modern world history in the years since 1991. Students begin their studies by exploring the fall of the Soviet Union and the end of the Cold War. Learners identify the ways in which the collapse of communism impacted eastern Europe, as well as Russia and other nations in the Soviet bloc. The struggle of many nations throughout the 90s to achieve independence and self-governance is explored as well. Students also analyze the economic struggles that many nations experienced in the years after the fall of the Soviet Union.
High school students in Hillsboro also study business education topics. Students explore the principles of business management, including leadership, communication, asset management, and staffing, among others. Learners identify the characteristics of a good business leader, as well as the methods members of management use to direct the growth of their business. International business is a central topic of study as well. Cultural and political factors that influence business are examined, as are the laws and regulations that control business.

Chalk Talk: Benefits of Volunteerism
Volunteerism is an activity that offers K-12 students a wide variety of benefits. Studies show that engaging in service to others improves mood, regulates emotions, and brings about feelings of satisfaction, joy, and optimism. Studies also show that it is a great activity to reduce stress and improve one’s immune system. Students that volunteer report improved self-esteem as well. By improving the lives of others, children are able to feel a sense of accomplishment and improved self-worth. Lots of learning takes place during volunteer activities. Students can learn new skills, learn about the community in which they live, and even find out things about themselves that they did not know. Volunteerism is also a great way for young people to learn about civic responsibility and the value of making positive contributions to the community.
