Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hillsboro District Curriculum
The English language arts curriculum integrates the instruction of reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary, and verbal communication so that students develop critical literacy skills. Grammar and language development is emphasized as it is important that students gain a thorough understanding of nouns and verbs in order to grasp other parts of speech, including adjectives and adverbs. Alongside proper language usage, the writing curriculum also supports the development of students unique voices so they grow as effective communicators.
In science, students learn about many topics including biology, earth and space science, chemistry, physics, geology, and environmental science. In geology, students learn about sedimentation, erosion, and weathering, and the roles each play in building up and tearing down landforms. This helps them better understand the natural word and how it formed and continues to change. Students also learn about ecosystems and the nature of interdependence among species. They also learn about natural resources including renewable energy sources.

- Parent/Community Liaison - So that the district can communicate effectively with parents and community members, it has established a Parent/Community Liaison that keeps people informed about issues and initiatives at the schools. The liaison is also assists the district with encouraging volunteerism in the schools.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Program is a rigorous program geared to preparing students for a college experience and future pursuits in global work and learning. The program ensures that students use critical thinking and program solving skills and develop the 21st century skills they need to succeed in a global society. Students are required to take courses in language and literature (English), language acquisition (foreign language), individuals and societies (social studies), experimental sciences, math and computer science, and inquiry skills; classes in the arts are optional. It is recommended that students take honors-level courses in the main content areas.
