Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hillside District Curriculum

The Hillside Public Schools is committed to developing curricula that are relevant and engaging for students. The Common Core State Standards provide guidance for math and language, arts curriculum development. The New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards govern what students should learn and know in all other subjects.

The technology curriculum focuses student learning on the use and manipulation of technology to access and evaluate information in order to solve problems. Students begin their technology education in elementary school, where they learn the basics of computers, such as how to type and use computer programs to complete assignments. Middle school students expand on this basic training to utilize computers to complete major text-based and multimedia assignments. Students also learn how to create and manipulate databases in order to organize and analyze information. High school students build off the experiences of elementary and middle school to create complex, multi-page documents, spreadsheets and desktop publishing presentations.

Chalk Talk: The Value of After-School Programs

Many school districts offer after-school programs for students who need extra help, be it a study hall to catch up on late work or tutoring services for students who need extra instructional time. However, districts are beginning to offer after-school enrichment programs to extend the learning day for students who wish to explore subjects that may not be offered during the regular school day. Such enrichment programs give students an opportunity to learn something new, such as robotics, a foreign language or a practical skill like cooking or carpentry. Acquiring these new skills can help boost kids’ self-esteem and confidence, while affording them a chance to explore a subject in which they are interested. In addition, after-school programs allow kids to interact with new people, expanding their social circles and improving their social skills.
