Chalk Talk: The Value of After-School Programs

Many school districts offer after-school programs for students who need extra help, be it a study hall to catch up on late work or tutoring services for students who need extra instructional time. However, districts are beginning to offer after-school enrichment programs to extend the learning day for students who wish to explore subjects that may not be offered during the regular school day. Such enrichment programs give students an opportunity to learn something new, such as robotics, a foreign language or a practical skill like cooking or carpentry. Acquiring these new skills can help boost kids’ self-esteem and confidence, while affording them a chance to explore a subject in which they are interested. In addition, after-school programs allow kids to interact with new people, expanding their social circles and improving their social skills.
