Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hinesville District Curriculum

There is a strong emphasis on literacy and writing in this district. Like many schools across the United States, this school is requiring students to read and write more extensively throughout their school career. This is intended to improve the overall reading, writing, and comprehension skills that students possess upon graduation from high school enabling them to be better prepared for the rigors of college or career.

The curriculum is focused on each student’s continual practice and improvement in the implementation of skills that are recommended by the Board of Education. In addition to the main content areas, there Fine Arts courses, Health and Physical Education, and World Languages. These courses also use clear standards that are recommended in the main curriculum and provide continuity to instruction. In high school, students have opportunities to explore their interests through a work and apprenticeship program if they choose to participate.

Chalk Talk: Reading for Meaning

While many people enjoy reading, reading for information is often hard for individuals to complete with absolute success. There are many ways to improve this vital skill regardless of one’s age. First, slow down and take a breath - reading information rapidly is not going to help you out. Remember you are reading for information. Block out distractors, if there are pictures or other distractors on the page; use a sheet of paper to cover up everything except the line you are reading. After each paragraph, stop and ask yourself what you just read if you are confused reread that section. Finally, do not fear taking notes. Jot down important ideas for topics and what they mean. The most important step is the first - simply slow down and read thoughtfully and carefully.
