Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Holdrege District Curriculum

In K-12 Reading, students work on their writing skills and they are instructed to write on a variety of topics and in many genres. They are made aware of their audience that they are writing for, such as a certain individuals, an organization or business, or an audience of adults. The students develop their purposeful writing and write letters, reports, narrative and expository essays, and other styles.

Aligning with the K-12 standards set forth by the Nebraska State Education Department, the Mathematics curriculum builds around computational, operational, math literacy and reasoning skills. The students are taught to compute problems using appropriate tools and skills. They work with rational numbers and solve and explain expressions that have an absolute value of integers, they also are instructed to calculate the square roots of integers and perfect squares, as well as the roots of whole numbers. Technology is used to calculate problems and as a practical application through which math is used.

Chalk Talk: The Role of the Elementary Science Teacher

Science is very important, as the students are taught to discover and use critical thinking skills. The science teacher in the elementary school imparts knowledge on the students in the areas of earth, physical, and life science. Hands-on lessons and the use of technology, as well as collaborative group work are all a part of the science classroom. The science teacher has a lot of responsibility because many times the students are working with objects that must be handled with care. When performing these “experiments” or “labs” the students must be monitored very closely. The science teacher’s job is not easy, but many see their job as “fun” because they get to see the children having a great time while learning!
