Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Homewood District Curriculum
Homewood City Schools believes that being fluent in all subject areas with their reading helps each student work at their highest ability. In mathematics, skills are taught, such as mathematical comprehension, adeptness, mathematical propensity, conceptual awareness, and fluency. The mathematics curriculum is a spiraling curriculum, and is brain-based, using manipulatives and real-world situations. Homewood City Schools provides hands-on and minds-on teaching techniques in all other subject areas, including science, history, and all supplemental classes in order for pupils to be academically prepared for a successful future.

Keeping Informed: Recent Homewood Educational News
- Developing Better Readers - The Foundation of Homewood City Schools wants every school library in the system to have eReaders and eBooks for the students. In the school year 2012-2013, The Foundation is coming very close to the goal of achieving this for the students. The Foundation of Homewood City reaches out to individuals and businesses who consistently donated to the schools. The libraries already have these learning devices, but have begun an initiative to add to the collection to serve more students.
- Staff Development for Teachers - Alabama is utilizing Web-based representations to deliver quality professional development for each educator. Every five years the teachers are required to recertify to be able to retain their teaching certificate, and in many states and counties, the teachers are required to pay for the college classes out of their pockets. Homewood City Schools, in partnership with Alabama schools, the recertification courses are at no cost and are online.
- Student Honored with AP Scholar Award - A former HHS scholar has won the Award for the College Board State AP. This merit was given to her because of her exceptional performance on the 2011 Advanced Placement Assessment. Only one female and one male student from each state win this award.

Chalk Talk: How to Determine If Your Child Can Benefit from Tutoring
If your child is feeling down about school, talk to your child's teacher about how your child is doing in class. If you are seeing a decrease in ability level through grades and assessments, conferencing with your child's teacher may give you an increased understanding of why your child is struggling. The teacher will also be able to communicate with you specific needs of your child, and where they see your child falling behind. At this point, a tutor may be the best option for you. Our tutors are able to pinpoint specific needs, and will be able to increase your child's educational progress.
