Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hondo District Curriculum

In the English language arts curriculum the focus in reading equally covers fiction and informational texts and the writing curriculum requires that students be able to write for a variety of purposes. These foundational skills are used throughout all subject areas which is why there is such a heavy emphasis on these abilities. Language use, grammar, and the development of voice and tone are also worked on so that students become strong communicators who can effectively write and engage in discussion.

In the mathematics curriculum at Hondo Independent School District, students learn how to work with numbers to find the solutions needed. They begin by learning how to assign a numerical value to items in a set. They then learn how to combine or take away items to come up with a new value. After they have mastered these basic items, they then learn how to add, subtract, multiply and divide numbers and how to combine each of these in formulas to find complex solutions. The skills learned in this subject are used each day of the students' lives, as is demonstrated throughout the math classes.

Chalk Talk: Preparing for Middle School

Preparing for Middle School Middle School can be a scary time for children. It is a stressful time as they are going through so many changes in just a few years. There a few ways that parents can make preparations for their children at this time. First, help take away some uncertainty by scheduling a visit to the school. If a copy of their schedule is available, parent and child can walk from room to room, to help find the classes, lunchroom, gym and locker. When preparing school supplies it is tempting to buy one of the largest backpacks available. Parents need to remember that the students just need it large enough to carry the materials needed, not extra, unnecessary things. Plus a smaller pack will help the child’s back. Another way for parents to prepare for this time is to stay up to date on the changes that the child will be going through, including emotionally, physically and intellectually.
