Chalk Talk: Getting the Most Out of Financial Aid

If you have a child heading off to college soon, now is the time to start thinking about the financial aid opportunities available to help you pay for their education. If you think you make too much money or that your child doesn’t have a good shot of getting financial aid, think again! Many opportunities exist even for families with incomes up to $180,000 per year. To begin, make sure you file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) early. Another great tip is to move money out of your child’s personal accounts and into a 529 College Savings Plan. The money in these plans is not considered in the FAFSA calculations, and therefore opens up more aid opportunities. These plans allow the deposits to grow tax-sheltered, and the withdrawals are tax-free so long as the money is used for educational expenses.
