Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hopkinton District Curriculum
The curriculum lays out a comprehensive series of learning objectives and testable benchmarks to guide teaching and learning in all core subjects across the grade levels. Each subject is broken down into major strands, or topics, that students begin to learn the fundamentals of during elementary school and then are able to do advanced work in during high school. For instance, in Math, young students learn about patterns they are beginning to develop an awareness of algebraic concepts which they will access later.
The literacy skills developed in the Language Arts curriculum is meant to bring about critical thinking, analysis, interpretation, and evaluation of information strategies for students. The assigned readings are in all genres so that students understand the different purposes authors have for writing books and are able to recognize an authors' intent. Research skills are also taught with an eye to ensuring students have ways to recognize the quality of information in books and online.
