Hot Springs District and Curriculum

All four of the school districts that serve students in Hot Springs, Arkansas, are supported by the Arkansas Department of Education. Providing curriculum guidelines, administering mandatory assessments, and monitoring student achievement are all functions of the Arkansas Department of Education. Hot Springs School District has over three thousand five hundred students in seven schools. The four elementary schools are all magnet schools and each has a different focus. Gardner is a Math, Science, and Technology Magnet School. Langston is an Aerospace and Environmental Magnet. Oaklawn is a Visual and Performing Arts Magnet School. Park is a Primary Years Programme and International Baccalaureate Magnet School. Parents have the opportunity to choose an elementary school with a focus that interests their child. Hot Springs School District also has an intermediate school for students in grades 5-6 and a middle school for students in grades 7-8. Both schools provide the Middle Years Programme and are International Baccalaureate Magnet Schools. Hot Springs High School has about seven hundred and fifty students, is for students in grades 9-12, and continues the International Baccalaureate Program.

Lakeside School District has over three thousand students in five schools that provide instruction in small group clusters: Lakeside Primary School, Lakeside Intermediate School, Lakeside Middle School, Lakeside Junior High School, and Lakeside High School. These small group clusters allow Lakeside School District to provide focused instruction on each school site. The Primary, intermediate, and Middle Schools have extensive handbooks that provide invaluable information to both students and parents regarding Lakeside School District’s policies, expectations, and regulations. The Junior High and High School have both handbooks and course catalogs that specify required and elective courses that are available to students.

It is important that children have a well-rounded education that includes art and music. Although schools emphasize reading, mathematics, and writing, research shows that children who participate in the arts do better in school. There are many ways that you can support your child's appreciation of the arts: Keep art materials available in your home and display your child's projects. Keep art appreciation creative with a variety of activities. Listen to many different types of music with your child. Watch television programs about art, music, dance, and other art forms with your child. Attend art activities that are appropriate for young artists with your child. Visit museums in your area and discuss art with your child during these visits. Enroll your child in community art classes. And, be a good role model by showing your appreciation for art to your child.
