Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Howard District Curriculum

The social studies curriculum gives students the chance to learn about society, history, culture, civics, geography, and institutions in the government, and economic concepts. The impact of human-environment interaction is examined as well. Students learn about the various ways in which humans modify and adapt their environment to meet their needs. Students examine America’s role in foreign wars in the 20th Century, from World War I to current engagements. Modern history is examined as well, with students analyzing the impact of technology on international relations.

The Science curriculum introduces students to many concepts in earth science, biology, chemistry, physics as well as topics like technology, engineering, and the environment. Students investigate atmospheric and oceanic circulation as part of the study of earth science. The nature of the geosphere is also examined. Learners differentiate between various types of rocks and explore the processes by which those rocks are formed. Students learn about destructive, constructive, and landform change processes as well.

Chalk Talk: Rolling Applications

With all the various types of college applications available, it can be difficult to decide which is best. Many have certain advantages but also certain restrictions. One of the simplest types is the Rolling application. With Rolling applications, colleges set a start and end date, usually a pretty broad range spanning from the beginning of the fall until late winter. Students are free to apply at any point during this time, and instead of the college sitting on the application until the deadline has passed, applications are read right away, with decisions coming typically within two to three weeks. The quick turnaround taken in conjunction with the lack of restrictions makes Rolling a popular application type with students.
