Chalk Talk: Smaller Classes Equal Better Education

Although there are a variety of factors that influence a child’s ability to learn and do so successfully, class size is among the most significant. Many studies have shown the positive impacts that a small class size has on student achievement. Particularly in elementary school, smaller class sizes result in across-the-board improvement for students’ grades. Higher achievement on standardized testing is also a benefit. There are behavioral improvements as well. Teachers with smaller classes report fewer student behavioral issues. There is also a noticeable improvement in student attendance, and at the high school level, far fewer students that drop out. While students from all walks of life benefit from these improvements, minority students and those from a low socioeconomic status see the most significant gains in the classroom.
