Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hubbard District Curriculum
In high school, Hubbard students participate in a math curriculum that begins with algebra. Students are trained to see structure in algebraic expressions. This skill allows them to interpret expressions, as well as write expressions in order to solve problems. Learners work with equations and inequalities as well. Equations are created that describe numbers or a relationship between numbers. Students learn to solve inequalities through graphical expression. Rational expressions and polynomials are another central aspect of the algebra curriculum. Students learn how to perform arithmetic operations on polynomials, and how to use polynomial identities in order to solve a problem.
Hubbard’s fine arts programming includes offerings in the fine arts. In middle school, students learn how to describe art, including how design elements are used to convey meaning or produce certain effects. Learners examine art around them, from local works to world-renown art, in order to compare and contrast various styles of artistic expression. Students also learn how to create their own art. Various tools and strategies are introduced that allow learners to create two-dimensional and three-dimensional pieces.

Chalk Talk: Smaller Classes Equal Better Education
Although there are a variety of factors that influence a child’s ability to learn and do so successfully, class size is among the most significant. Many studies have shown the positive impacts that a small class size has on student achievement. Particularly in elementary school, smaller class sizes result in across-the-board improvement for students’ grades. Higher achievement on standardized testing is also a benefit. There are behavioral improvements as well. Teachers with smaller classes report fewer student behavioral issues. There is also a noticeable improvement in student attendance, and at the high school level, far fewer students that drop out. While students from all walks of life benefit from these improvements, minority students and those from a low socioeconomic status see the most significant gains in the classroom.
