Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Huntington District Curriculum

The path to success begins for every student in the city of Huntington begins with the elementary school. Huntington offers public education starting with Pre-Kindergarten and continuing through grade 5. Elementary students are instructed in math, language arts, social studies and developmental reading along with supplementary classes in art and general music education. Of interesting note, the social studied curriculum includes a class dedicated to West Virginia history as well as United States history.

The high school program in Huntington is the flagship of the cities education system. The high school curriculum is dedicated to joining traditional content centered education with the development of analytical skills that fosters productive 21st century citizens. Students are charged with the responsibility of choosing a career path, either professional or skilled, that will direct their course selection. Professional track students take classes that prepare them to enter and be successful in a four year college.

Chalk Talk: Feed the Hand that Feeds You

Every day, teachers all over the country go to work with a plan and a hope to reach the students they will encounter throughout the day with the wonders and benefits of education. These teachers most likely have spent time trying to put together a lesson that will be engaging, memorable and informative. After all the preparation teacher do before class, all they ask for, in most cases, is that the students give the lesson a chance and try to learn something. Sadly, many teachers meet with student rejection and apathy on a daily basis. This can be discouraging and drive a good, motivated teacher to be apathetic and unmotivated themselves. To relieve this education-killing reaction, it might be beneficial to give your teachers some encouragement or at minimum a “thank you”. A simple kind word can give a teacher the emotional and mental sustenance they need to carry on the work of feeding your mind.
