Chalk Talk: Flipped Classrooms Increase in Popularity

More and more classrooms in public schools are being flipped. The notion of the flipped classroom places more of the initial responsibility for learning on kids. Teachers might assign students to read a passage, explore a website, or watch a video related to an upcoming topic of study in class. Armed with the information they glean from their independent studies, students then come to class with at least a basic, working knowledge of the subject. By putting the onus of responsibility on students to begin their studies, classroom learning becomes much more robust and meaningful. Instead of directing a lecture on a new topic, teachers can engage students in an active discussion or utilize experiential learning techniques to really get kids involved in their learning. Lab work is a particularly effective strategy for the flipped classroom, because it requires students to apply what they learned at home to an exercise in the classroom environment. By flipping their classroom, teachers can use their precious class time to engage students in much higher level learning, which in turn facilitates improved higher order thinking skills as well as improved retention of information.
