Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Huron District Curriculum
The technology curriculum in Huron helps students acquire the skills necessary to effectively utilize technology. Various productivity applications are explored, such as word processing and spreadsheet programs that can help students fulfill their educational or career-related responsibilities. Learners also explore how technology can facilitate improved communication, be that through instant messaging programs or video chat programs that allow for communication with people around the globe. The various emerging social uses of technology are examined as well.
Huron’s financial literacy curriculum focuses on business law topics that are integral to understanding business, commercial, and consumer transactions. Students gain an awareness of the laws that govern consumer protections and identify the ways in which government agencies seek to ensure consumers are protected against goods and services that are substandard. Unfair trade practices are examined as well. Students look at false advertising, unfair pricing methods, and mislabeling goods as means by which businesses seek to take advantage of consumers.

Chalk Talk: Flipped Classrooms Increase in Popularity
More and more classrooms in public schools are being flipped. The notion of the flipped classroom places more of the initial responsibility for learning on kids. Teachers might assign students to read a passage, explore a website, or watch a video related to an upcoming topic of study in class. Armed with the information they glean from their independent studies, students then come to class with at least a basic, working knowledge of the subject. By putting the onus of responsibility on students to begin their studies, classroom learning becomes much more robust and meaningful. Instead of directing a lecture on a new topic, teachers can engage students in an active discussion or utilize experiential learning techniques to really get kids involved in their learning. Lab work is a particularly effective strategy for the flipped classroom, because it requires students to apply what they learned at home to an exercise in the classroom environment. By flipping their classroom, teachers can use their precious class time to engage students in much higher level learning, which in turn facilitates improved higher order thinking skills as well as improved retention of information.
