Hutchinson District and Curriculum

USD #308’s curriculum meets state and national standards. The Curriculum Council directs the development of the curriculum that centers on core “essentials” in reading, math, science, social studies, and writing. Grade level and course essentials are developed by each core area, and teachers are expected to follow these guidelines during the school year by use of a standard pacing guide. After data analysis and review of best teaching practices, curriculum is revised as needed.

We currently cover the following Hutchinson-area school district: Hutchinson Public Schools USD #308.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hutchinson District Curriculum

The curriculum which the district uses is an extensive document that explains the yearly progression of learning that students will do in each subject. It provides the learning objectives while also giving educators the flexibility to teach the lessons in the way they see as best-suited to their students. The curriculum has many goals including the development of skills and knowledge, and increasing students conceptual awareness and critical thinking skills each year.

For example, in the Language Arts curriculum students learn to read for understanding and then continue to build strategies to help them become more independent readers and thinkers. They learn ways to decode the meaning of words, to look for an authors intent or bias, to evaluate the quality of information, and to analyze the goals of a piece of literature – whether it is fiction of non-fiction. As they learn to read, they also develop a similar range of writing skills from creative to analytic.

Chalk Talk: Nurturing a Love of Reading in Your Young Child

When children are exposed to books from an early age, a love of stories and learning is cultivated. Imagination takes root as children discover new worlds and wonders, come to understand new and fascinating characters, and learn important life lessons through the books they encounter. With continued access to stories that stimulate a child’s interests, a life-long reader and learner can be created. Our duty as parents is to encourage reading daily, from the very beginning of a child’s life. In the early years, select books for your child filled with bright colors, animals, and lyric language. When children see the pictures and words come together in song, their imaginations will take hold and flourish. As your child gets older, help him or her to select his own books by visiting the library frequently, making sure to explore a broad range of books that center on budding interests. Also include stories promoting important life lessons that contribute to his understanding of the world. Use books to broaden your child’s education in an engaging way that will lead to a lifetime of enjoyment.
