Chalk Talk: Late School Days Bring Benefits to Students

If you have a child that hates getting up for school in the morning, you certainly aren’t alone. Even some school districts have recognized that starting school at 8 AM or earlier is not conducive to kids learning. In fact, research shows that there are several excellent benefits to beginning the school day later in the morning. With added time in the morning to wake up and get ready for school, attendance improves. The more time students spend in school, the more time they have to interact with their teachers and learn the material. As a result, schools with later start times report higher standardized test scores. This is especially true for tests of science and math. Class grades are also improved at schools with a later start time. Parent advocacy of this issue is helping to change start times around the country.
