Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Hutchinson District Curriculum

The English language arts curriculum in Hutchinson exposes students to a variety of skills related to effectively reading literature. In elementary school, students learn how to determine the central theme of a story or poem by examining the details in the text. Learners analyze the development of major characters in a story as well, noting the different ways in which they author helps the reader get to know and understand the character. The way in which a story is crafted is explored as well.

The health science curriculum helps middle school students understand the ways in which one’s cultural background impacts health. Learners examine health risks for various populations. Life expectancies for different groups of people are explored as well. A variety of risk factors that impact health are also analyzed. Students look at hereditary and genetic influences on health, as well as how people’s decisions and behavior can impact the way in which someone feels. Students explore different body systems, such as the cardiovascular and respiratory system to understand how they co-function.

Chalk Talk: Late School Days Bring Benefits to Students

If you have a child that hates getting up for school in the morning, you certainly aren’t alone. Even some school districts have recognized that starting school at 8 AM or earlier is not conducive to kids learning. In fact, research shows that there are several excellent benefits to beginning the school day later in the morning. With added time in the morning to wake up and get ready for school, attendance improves. The more time students spend in school, the more time they have to interact with their teachers and learn the material. As a result, schools with later start times report higher standardized test scores. This is especially true for tests of science and math. Class grades are also improved at schools with a later start time. Parent advocacy of this issue is helping to change start times around the country.
