Iola District and Curriculum

Iola Unified School District’s curriculum is rigorous and supportive. The curriculum used is the Kansas College and Career Ready Standards. Students are given clean expectations for what they should learn by the end of each school year, and teachers are afforded opportunities to individualize their lessons to fit the needs of each student, whether they need remedial work to catch up to grade level or are working beyond grade level. Interventions and enrichment services are also offered when needed. The arts and community-centered programming available in the district have been recognized at both the state and national level.

We currently cover the following Iola-area school district: Iola Unified School District 257.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Iola District Curriculum

The Kansas College and Career Ready Standards curriculum focuses on critical thinking and reading skills and analytical writing skills. Students read complex texts and write well-reasoned essays about them. They also make oral presentations and discuss their reading in class. In mathematics classes, students study the reasoning behind mathematical formulas so that they have a firm foundation of understanding on which to build. Teachers spend more time on fewer topics to help ensure this.

In science classes, students apply their learning to real-world situations whenever possible. They learn about the process that scientists use to form, test, and prove hypotheses. They learn how to observe and take notes about what they are discovering through their scientific observations and also learn how to read scientific data in texts, charts, and other formats. They also learn about the scientific resources available to conduct further research. The skills, techniques, and learning they gain from this curriculum will serve them well after graduation.

Chalk Talk: School Profile

The School Profile is part of the college application packet, provided by the registrar or college counselor. It’s a document which gives insight into the student’s high school. The Profile includes a list of advanced classes offered, average standardized test scores for the school, usual colleges students attend, and information about the rigor and tone of the school. This provides perspective for the college as to the student’s opportunities for taking rigorous and challenging classes and whether the culture supports that. It’s not fair to compare a student to other students at other schools, and the Profile allows the college to simply look at what was available and what the student took advantage of. This can do a lot of work for an applicant and help them succeed.
