Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Iowa City District Curriculum

Math education starts elementary students with learning the basics of numbers, counting and algebraic thinking. By high school, students move onto specialized instruction in statistics and probability, algebra, functions, modeling and geometry.

Early grade level science instruction in Iowa City schools involves familiarizing young scholars with science as inquiry. They're taught to plan and carry out simple experiments and also use math for scientific inquiry. Middle and high school students build on these foundational principles to prepare them for more advanced topics.

Language Arts curricula for Iowa City Schools start with several foundations in grades K-5. Close reading for details, writing to build and present knowledge, and group collaboration are introduced to elementary school children. Students learn to become critical readers, writers of cogent arguments, and collaborative listeners and speakers.

Iowa City Community Schools are child-centered and future-focused. As the State of Iowa governs the curriculum for these schools, Iowa Core Standards apply. Each grade level’s instruction gradually builds on the one before it, so that students can retain crucial concepts.

Chalk Talk: Choosing a College

Choosing a college can be both exciting and stressful. There are many factors to consider: price, reputation, location, and degree programs offered. Here are a few things to consider when choosing, or helping someone else choose a college or university: Examine your own values and beliefs. Make sure you pick a school that aligns with those values. Assess your strengths, weaknesses and reasons for going to college. Make sure that you like the college's culture. Know that a prestigious college might not be a better fit for you than a lesser-known one. Finally, do your research. This means spending at least a few hours on campus and doing internet research about degree programs, activities and services they offer.
