Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Isanti District Curriculum

The high school science curriculum in Isanti helps students develop an understanding of how Earth and the solar system came to be. Students explore the Big Bang Theory, and explain how cosmic dust and gas formed the basis for all celestial bodies approximately 4.6 billion years ago. Learners identify how Earth has come to be in its present state, noting that the interaction between landmasses, oceans, and the atmosphere have made the planet habitable for life. Environmental conditions on Earth are contrasted with those of other bodies in the solar system as well, including the moon and nearby planets.

Isanti’s elementary English language arts curriculum is designed to integrate the skills of reading and writing as well as speaking and listening. Students take part in many shared literacy experiences including read alouds, small and large group discussions, and individual presentations. They also focus on language and vocabulary, and learn skills to decode meaning from what they read. In grammar, students also examine common prefixes and suffixes, and use that knowledge to decode words that include those prefixes and suffixes.

Chalk Talk: How to Reduce School Anxiety

There are many issues that can cause your child to be anxious about school. Concerns about grades, making friends, and test anxiety can all contribute to negative feelings about the school experience. However, there are several things you can do to help reduce these anxieties. First, being involved in the educational process is a big help. You can work with your child and his or her teachers to figure out the best ways to provide support and reduce anxiety. Second, if your child is concerned about grades or has test anxiety, consider connecting him or her with a tutor to build skills in their areas of weakness and develop strategies for effective test taking. Lastly, if social concerns cause your child anxiety, encourage them to join clubs, sports, or other after-school activities so they can meet other children and develop friendships outside of class.
