Ithaca District and Curriculum
The Ithaca City School District (ICSD) covers the areas of Ithaca, Caroline, Danby and Enfield, New York. The district includes one pre-K School, eight elementary schools, two middle schools, one High school, and one alternative school. The District began a program called the Ithaca Public Education Initiative to help find additional resources for the district’s students. The program, which started in 1996, is now an integral part of the community. The initiative partners with community members, area colleges and local businesses to provide students with additional opportunities and educational experiences such as the Kid’s Discover the Trail and the College Discovery programs.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ithaca District Curriculum
The basic curriculum for all New York Schools is now the Common Core Curriculum Framework. These national standards for curriculum have as their goal to equalize curriculum across the state so that no matter what school a person attends the educational curriculum is the same. The precepts of Common Core is to concentrate on the essentials and for teachers to ensure that the students know the material, understand when and how to apply their learning to the real world.
New York State Schools require that students pass Regents exams in order to obtain a High School Diploma unless the student is part of a specified Special Education program. All students must pass five Regents exams including one in English & Language Arts, Global History, U.S. History, Science and Math. Students who are part of the Advanced Regents Program are also required to take a foreign language and Regents coursework and exams in Math and Science.
