Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Jackson District Curriculum
In elementary school there is a strong focus on Language Arts. Students first learn phonemic sounds and blends as they are introduced the concept of reading. Once students are phonemically ready, they begin to read texts that start off with simple sentences and move to complex sentences with varying lengths. They then start reading for meaning and creating written responses to the literature. These are kept in a Reading Response Journal that they keep all year.
Middle and high school students benefit from many opportunities to individualize their education. Team teaching is a common occurrence in middle school. This form of teaching involves a core group of two to four teachers that teach a team of students. Team teaching allows students to get used to the idea of switching classes while fostering a strong team dynamic. Virtual learning is another option that students can participate in to take courses not offered at the school.

Chalk Talk: Flipped Learning
Flipped learning is an option in which students take in their lecture time via computer and use their school time for more hands-on applications of their learning. Online learning has been an option for college students for over a decade. However, this trend is recently becoming popular in public school systems across the country. Online classes offer a myriad of benefits to students of all ages. One of these benefits is the exposure to technology that will be carried through a student’s academic life. With most colleges and universities offering online-only degrees, this early experience can give students an advantage. Some students need to take virtual classes because of scheduling difficulties with internships or sports. This allows students to pursue their passions while not sacrificing their education. Another benefit to students and school systems is the cost advantage of online learning. Online classes will soon be a mainstream standard in classrooms as technology and education continue to evolve.
