Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Jackson District Curriculum

The Language Arts curriculum has been designed to assist students in all aspects of their learning, literacy development, and communication skills. Students also become aware of the value of narratives. They take loosely related events and weave them together using impactful language and connecting ideas. The processes of reviewing and revising writings are instilled in students as part of this curriculum as well.

Students in Jackson participate in an arts curriculum that includes a study of the visual arts. In high school, students work with a variety of mediums to create two-dimensional and three-dimensional art. Advanced students demonstrate the ability to utilize highly technical artistic skills to create artworks worthy of an exhibition. Learners develop a portfolio that highlights their various works of art as well. The portfolio must demonstrate a wide range of technical skills and media, and also prove the student’s ability to solve visual arts problems.

Chalk Talk: How Music Improves Students’ Lives

Music studies are an integral component of any comprehensive K-12 curriculum. Because music is part of the fabric of society, studying it in elementary, middle, and high school informs students about the large culture in which we live. Learning and performing music from around the world also opens students’ eyes to the ways in which other people see the world. There are improvements in academic performance as well. Music students consistently score better on standardized tests, particularly in math. In fact, students that study music score 27% higher on tests of fractions and proportional math. Additionally, children that study music throughout their elementary and middle school years demonstrate significantly higher levels of math proficiency by the twelfth grade. On the SAT test, students with a history of musical studies score higher on the verbal and math tests. It is no wonder then, that the U.S. Department of Education includes music as one of the essential subjects to learn alongside math, English, social studies, and science.
