Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Jamestown District Curriculum

The district has adopted the New York State Common Core Learning Standards for use in all regular school programs. In English and Language Arts students are focused on the basic principles of Common Core which stresses reading, writing, listening, speaking and being able to demonstrate a command of the English language.Students learn the basics of critical analysis of reading material, a skill they will add to all through their education.

In Math, the essence of the Common Core curriculum is on learning the fundamentals of math skills so that students can utilize the skills with confidence. To achieve this, the coursework has been honed down so that there is less to learn but what is learned is learned with fluency. Students learn the basics of mathematical computation and have an introduction to the basics of algebra and geometry. They also learn about computational tools and basic statistics.
