Jamestown District and Curriculum

The schools in Jamestown follow Common Core Standards and RI Department of Education GLE’s (grade-level expectations) to guide instruction in all core classes. The curriculum was designed with many goals in mind, one overall aim is to prepare students in the early years with the fundamentals needed to do the higher-level work expected in high school and college. By designing a curriculum that builds progressively, students are able to draw upon prior knowledge and use reflective thinking to understand more complex topics.

We currently cover the following Jamestown-area school district: Jamestown School Department.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Jamestown District Curriculum

The curriculum in Math starts with developing the numerical sense of children and introducing shapes, patterns, and other manipulatives that demonstrate quantifiable principles. When students are in middle school, they may begin to learn about more advanced topics in geometry like proofs or take pre-algebra and begin to see how patterns and equations have similarities. This foundation helps students develop the problem-solving skills, such as understanding the best method to solve a problem, the types of computational tools needed, and how to communicate their process of thought.

The Language Arts curriculum has many goals including proficient reading, writing, communication, media viewing, and research skills. This entails a number of different critical thinking processes such as analysis, awareness of audience, awareness of media bias, and the ability to evaluate resources, particularly understanding credibility with online sources. These goals help students become independent readers and writers by high school, who are prepared for college academics.

Chalk Talk: What Is the Common Core?

The Common Core Standards are a curriculum for Math and Language Arts that was designed by a national coalition of educators and professionals. The goal was to provide a framework for learning in these subjects that begins in kindergarten and goes through graduation which would help students build the core skills in each subject and use them in support of other subject area learning. The standards consist of a series of learning objectives - what reading strategies a student should have by a particular grade level, for instance - that follow along major strands (topics) in the subject. There is also an emphasis on the types of critical thinking and reasoning that students are supposed to develop so that students are well prepared for college and career pursuits.
