Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Jasper District Curriculum

Jasper City Schools uses Project-Based Learning in its school system. Project-Based Learning is a method of learning where students use hand-on technology and their own discovery skills to learn a concept. It is highly effective in the acquisition of knowledge. Being actively engaged in their learning, children are more likely to retain the information.

The Project-Based initiative used by Jasper City Schools enables the teachers to educate by having the students collaborate with peers, research the material, and produce information. In mathematics, Jasper City Schools uses this type of teaching technique along with the technology that is available within the schools. Students from the primary to the advanced levels of mathematics use technology to formulate and create connections to the real world. In Language Arts, Project-Based Learning is a great way for the students to read non-fiction by researching the topic at hand, and to explore beyond the actual text they are reading.

Chalk Talk: Teachers That Use Technology

There are many educators that use technology within their instruction. Items such as iPads, iPods, Smartboards, laptop computers and such keep the teaching and learning creative and fresh. The students seem to enjoy learning through technology, and even the testing that is administered is completely online. Technology is not just for teaching, though. Teachers use online resources very often to find the best teaching trends and ideas to effectively instruct concepts from the State Standards. Websites that focus on teaching have a wealth of information for teachers as well as parents!
