Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Jefferson City District Curriculum

In early grades, Science helps to coach young children to draw scientific conclusions and recognize patterns based on simple experiments. A special emphasis is placed on formulating and testing hypotheses, keeping focused on how science applies to the world at large. In high school science, which spans from chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, and numerous electives, students take inquiry-based learning into their own hands—developing their own scientific experiments and communicating their knowledge.

Visual and Performing Arts are strongly supported via district curriculum, providing a wealth of opportunity for students to explore their creativity. Social Studies supports early learning through discussion of historical and global affairs, and the major elements of geographical analysis, helping students become true global learners. The Communication Arts build strong skills in vocabulary, grammar, syntax, and literary analysis, culminating in strong writing and reading skills for each student.

Chalk Talk: Piaget’s Theory of Cognitive Development

As we grow, our brains soak up knowledge. In doing so, we create mental maps that help us understand and learn from our environment. Young children progress from a stage of concrete, physical learning, to more abstract and conceptual conclusions at older ages. In the preoperational stage, from 2 to 7, children engage in play activities that promote imagination but may not always allow children to see things from another point of view. Children will play pretend, imagining a piece of paper is really a plate, and reimagining that a box is a spaceship. In the concrete stage, from 7 to 11, children start to draw conclusions from observations and apply logic, becoming more emotionally mature. In the formal operational stage, from adolescence to adulthood, we become adept at drawing logical conclusions from evidence, forming hypotheses about the future and deducing outcomes.
