Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Johnstown District Curriculum

Both English/Language Arts and Math follow a spiral curriculum, and students are expected to become adept in basic skills before they enter Grades 4, 5, and 6. Starting during the intermediate years, students are challenged with more analytic work to develop critical thinking skills. Students who excel in Language Arts and Math have the opportunity for advanced study as early as middle school, and will enter a college prep track early. Other students will have later opportunities as they progress through school, and all students will become part of an intensive educational experience.

A unique feature of the high school curriculum is that students are followed for a year after high school graduation to track outcomes, whether they attend college, university, a vocational program, or enter the military. Students are expected to achieve objectives as they move towards graduation, and some will meet college prep standards at an earlier age than others.

Middle and high school are not too early for your student to explore opportunities for careers and education. Besides reading biographies about leaders in their chosen field, they might want to spend time volunteering in an animal shelter if they are interested in veterinary medicine, writing articles for the local newspaper, or even attending special summer camps in science or technology.
