Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Johnstown District Curriculum

Both English/Language Arts and Math follow a spiral curriculum, and students are expected to become adept in basic skills before they enter Grades 4, 5, and 6. Starting during the intermediate years, students are challenged with more analytic work to develop critical thinking skills. Students who excel in Language Arts and Math have the opportunity for advanced study as early as middle school, and will enter a college prep track early. Other students will have later opportunities as they progress through school, and all students will become part of an intensive educational experience.

A unique feature of the high school curriculum is that students are followed for a year after high school graduation to track outcomes, whether they attend college, university, a vocational program, or enter the military. Students are expected to achieve objectives as they move towards graduation, and some will meet college prep standards at an earlier age than others.

They gave up their holiday to learn more about Dr. King and to work in service projects to help other children. Adults and children had the opportunity to share a meaningful day.
  • Johnstown's Part of the Political Process - Reporters from the largest television network in Pakistan visited a Greater Johnstown Area middle school as part of a tour to learn more about elections in the United States. • Johnstown Future MD Gains Medical School Training - One Johnstown teenager has known what he wants to do since he was in middle school, and he had a wonderful opportunity to see firsthand what medical school might be like. He got to attend a summer program at a medical school in Grenada, where he worked in the clinic and helped prepare supplies. He has also worked in a local emergency room, and is using those experiences as part of his senior project.

Chalk Talk: Looking Toward the Future

Middle and high school are not too early for your student to explore opportunities for careers and education. Besides reading biographies about leaders in their chosen field, they might want to spend time volunteering in an animal shelter if they are interested in veterinary medicine, writing articles for the local newspaper, or even attending special summer camps in science or technology.
