Chalk Talk: What Is Behaviorism?

Sometimes learning is a mental process that incorporates past learning and prior experiences. Other times, learning is an acquired behavior that can be promoted by a reward. How many times have we strived for a good grade on a test, or for extra credit, and felt a sense of achievement or reward when we achieved those goals? The philosophy of behaviorism is very much an objectively observable phenomenon, like observable scientific phenomena. However, it dictates that learning can be a product, to some degree, of conditioning. There are two main types of conditioning: classic, and behavioral or operant. Classic conditioning has been achieved when we reflexively respond to a stimulus; a famous example of classic conditioning involves the dogs, of Russian physiologist Ivan Pavlov, which salivated when a bell was rung for food, even when no food was present. Behavioral or operant conditioning occurs when we are rewarded for a response, such as a good grade, with the sense of achievement making that response.
