Jordan District and Curriculum

Jordan Public Schools is a comprehensive K-12 school district dedicated to promoting the success of all students. The district seeks to inspire children to learn by developing engaging, yet challenging curricula that prepare students for the rigors of life and work in the 21st century. Each school has strong ties to the neighborhood in which it is located, with parents and family members deeply involved in the activities in which their children participate. Teachers, staff members, and administrators are likewise an essential part of the learning community, and ensure that all children have the support they need to reach their highest possible potential.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Jordan District Curriculum

High school science students in Jordan participate in an in-depth study of earth and space science. Learners discover the various sources of energy available on Earth, among them the sun, radioactive isotopes, and gravity. Students also explore how the internal heat of Earth is transferred outward, and how this convection fuels the movement of tectonic plates. The manner in which energy is absorbed and distributed on Earth is also analyzed. Students note how the rotation of Earth, ocean currents, location of mountains, and the composition of the atmosphere all influence those processes.

The music program helps students learn how to read musical notation, including notes on the treble and bass clefs, dotted rhythms, and mixed meters. Vocal and instrumental students acquire the skills necessary to perform solo and small group pieces. In small groups, students demonstrate an understanding of harmonies, as well as the ability to match tone, rhythm, and pitch with other musicians. Composition techniques are also learned, with students utilizing technology to create and preserve pieces that they have created.

Chalk Talk: Flipped Classrooms

In recent years, more and more teachers are implementing a flipped classroom model of instruction. Essentially, a flipped classroom places much of the onus of responsibility on students to be prepared for new units of study. For example, rather than offering an introductory lecture on a topic, a teacher would instead instruct students to watch a video online or listen to a podcast on the subject as homework. Doing so gives students that foundational knowledge they need to begin their studies of a new topic. It also frees up class time for deeper and higher-level discussions and activities related to the topic. While there are many advantages to this set up, chief among them is that it prepares students for college level studies because it closely resembles the approach to learning in higher education.
