Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Jupiter District Curriculum
Elementary school is the time for students to get a firm grasp of basic arithmetic, systems of measurement, shapes, time, and money. In middle school, students begin to apply the basic concepts they have learned and are introduced to algebra, probability and statistics, geometry, and ratios and proportions. Then in high school, students round out their knowledge with geometry, statistics, and algebra.
Elementary students in Palm Beach County Schools begin their journey in Language Arts by learning the sounds each letter makes, building words out of letters, building sentences out of words, and building written pieces out of sentences. Middle and high school students broaden their horizons by reading literature from different places and times, and by writing for different purposes. Throughout their education, students learn how to use grammar and mechanics properly, how to speak and discuss, and how to listen.

Chalk Talk: How to Help with Early Literacy
Early literacy is the first step to being able to read and write well. Help your child get off to a good start by promoting early literacy. Sing songs with your child. Provide him or her with books. Create a special place for him or her to keep paper, pens, and pencils for practicing writing. Let him or her see you read a book, type an e-mail, or write a thank-you note. Go to the library. Ask your child to read road signs. Challenge his or her vocabulary skills by using words he or she has never heard before and then explaining the meaning. Nurturing your child’s literacy will enable him or her to excel in language arts and, in turn, other subjects.
