Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Kalispell District Curriculum

In English Language Arts, oral language teaching and learning is focused upon along with reading and writing. When developing a writing task for presentation, the students are taught to develop the topic with facts, definitions, specific details, while referencing quotes and other information that is relevant to their chosen thesis. The students, when doing public speaking are taught to clearly introduce a topic, give an overview of the focus of the presentation and paper written, and group all related information in a logical manner.

In Mathematics, for example, students must master the skill of identifying, problem solving, doing various operations, and explaining the topic of fractions. The students are taught in the early primary grades about the concept of fractions, such as what a fraction is, while showing and manipulating pictures and objects identifying parts and whole. From that point on the teaching and learning of fractions becomes more advanced into the secondary level.

Chalk Talk: Preparing Students for Public School

When children are four or under, many parents opt to send them to a preschool in order to prepare them for Kindergarten. Preschool teaches students how to be properly social, such as teaching them how to play with others, talk to others, and share. It also teaches the children a little self-discipline, as many preschools these days do have the children sit at tables and do some worksheets or hands-on activities. Also, preschool simply gives the students a structured school setting to help ease the transition into Kindergarten.
