Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Keansburg District Curriculum

The Keansburg School District has devised a curriculum that prepares students to be successful in all aspects of life. Student learning is driven by standards-based lessons that are aligned with both the Common Core State Standards and the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards. Standards are in place for nine content areas: world languages, technology, 21st Century life and careers, health and physical education, visual and performing arts, social studies, science, language arts and math.

As part of the 21st Century life and careers curriculum, students engage in activities that build problem solving and critical thinking skills. In elementary school, students learn how to recognize problems and brainstorm methods to solve the problem. Students also learn to evaluate potential resources that can help them to solve issues that arise. In middle school, students identify a real-life problem in their school or community and devise a plan to resolve the problem. In high school, students analyze problem-solving strategies used by countries around the globe to solve problems.

Chalk Talk: Three Reasons to Get a Vocational Education

Vocational education is a great alternative for students who don’t want or don’t need to attend college. Vocational schools offer excellent programs at a fraction of the cost of a four-year institution. Since vocational programs tend to be two years or shorter, students can enter the workforce and earn a living long before their college-bound counterparts. And despite what many people think, graduates who have vocational training now find jobs faster and make more money than graduates of a four-year college. This is due in large part to changes in the workforce that require workers to have on-the-job skills immediately upon their hire. With career-focused training, experiential learning, mentorships and internships, vocational education is a great way to prepare for an excellent career in a cost-efficient and time-efficient manner.
