Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Kelowna District Curriculum

In math, problem-solving strategies in numerical operations, algebraic relationships, geometry, and data analysis are studied so that students have high level skills in each topic. In geometry, students are expected to develop their spatial reasoning skills and recognize the practical applications of geometric concepts. Similarity is another key topic. Similarity transformations are studied, and students learn how to prove geometric theorems that involve similarity. Students also acquire the ability to use coordinates to prove theorems algebraically.

In science, students learn to form hypotheses and provide sound reasoning for accepting or rejecting hypotheses. Students compare things using various criteria, including number, shape, size, color, weight, and motion. They also learn how to document findings in drawings, reports, and graphs. Students learn how to use appropriate investigative tools as well, including microscopes, rulers, graduated cylinders, weights, and scales. Students work on devising methods for interpreting that data to draw informed conclusions. Based on their conclusions and analysis, students then come to a determination about the validity of their findings.

Kelowna District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The curriculum for learning in Kelowna was developed by the province to provide a framework for organizing the delivery of knowledge at grade-appropriate levels. Each subject has Prescribed Learning Outcomes (PLOs) and these provide the targets for what students should be able to know and do in the subject in their grade. They follow a scope and sequence that allows for both breadth and depth in each course of study. Standardized testing that occurs province-wide is based upon the framework provided by the curriculum and used to make sure that all students are achieving the goals of the curriculum.

We currently cover the following Kelowna-area school districts: Central Okanagan School District, Catholic Independent Schools of Nelson Diocese.

Chalk Talk: Sports Offer Many Benefits to Children

Getting your child involved in sports is a great way to help them stay active and physically fit. However, there are many other benefits that children garner from participation in athletics. Students who take part in sports demonstrate higher levels of self-esteem than do their peers. The growth and improvement they experience on the field provides a sense of accomplishment and pride. Sporting events also teach children valuable skills such as communication and teamwork. By working with others to achieve a common goal, kids learn to take responsibility for their actions, while also having positive experiences relying on others. Time management is an additional skill that athletes develop. Particularly for children in high school, who have multiple classes, clubs and activities, and jobs to occupy their time, time management is a crucially important skill to develop.
