Kenai District and Curriculum
The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District Curriculum was developed in alignment with Alaska State Standards and Grade Level Expectations (GLEs). In elementary school, the Math curriculum at each grade level focuses on foundational concepts and skills in numbers and operations, measurement, statistics and probability, geometry, and problem solving. In middle school, the focus is on gathering data, making conjectures, formulating models, inventing counter examples, and presenting solid arguments that clarify complex ideas. High school math students advance their core knowledge in algebra and geometry and can select courses which help them understand how math is applied in their daily lives and advanced courses which prepare them to pursue college or technical careers.
Science is taught as an inquiry-based discipline. Elementary and middle grade curriculum strands include physical science, life science, and earth science. Students also explore the intersection of science and technology. Students gain cultural and social perspectives on science by investigating landmark scientific advances, the role of women in science, and how scientific phenomena are illustrated in Native American stories and art. High school students have access to individual courses in the science disciplines. Advanced Placements courses and testing are also available for students wishing to accelerate their science education.
We currently cover the following Kenai-area school district: Kenai Peninsula Borough School District.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Kenai District Curriculum
Elementary-age students learn the fundamentals of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Middle school students learn to have collaborative conversations and deepen their skill in writing grammatically correct fiction and non-fiction prose. High school students read literary fiction and write critical responses, learn research writing, and expand their communications skills to include making well-supported logical arguments orally and in writing. The analytic reading, writing, and communication which students conduct supports learning throughout students education.
