Kenora District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Students in Kenora are taught using a curricular model that establishes clear standards for academic learning and also establishes series of coursework in enrichment-type subjects. Subject-area teaching across the curriculum is organized so that elementary age students receive a foundational learning experience and secondary students are presented with in-depth instruction in topics they learned about during elementary and middle school. The curriculum is flexible in that it allows for innovative course and program offerings. With the increase of technology in daily life and work, the curriculum has also established programs that allow students to learn advanced topics in technology. The goal of the curriculum is to prepare students for their future pursuits by providing a strong foundation of knowledge.

We currently cover the following Kenora-area school districts: Keewatin-Patricia District School Board and Kenora Catholic District School Board.

Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Kenora District Curriculum

The curriculum for English starts by developing the language-based skills for elementary age students. Phonics, word decoding strategies, and basic reading comprehension are established and students are taught how to express their thoughts in writing. The strands of communication, cultural understanding and awareness, the evaluation of information, and ways to develop written expression are all central to the English curriculum. Reading encompasses all subjects and genres as the goal is that learning in this subject support learning in other subjects areas as well.

The Math curriculum begins with basics in numbers, numerical operations, measurement and spatial reasoning, and ways of understanding quantitative data. In grade 9, students take a year-long course covering topics of algebra, geometry, and data analysis. Students are able to choose between taking this course in the Academic or Applied format. The Academic format takes a theoretical approach to these topics and the Applied format takes a practical approach to the same topics. All standards for learning are the same in these two programs, the difference is in the presentation of information and the types of assignments students will work on.

Chalk Talk: Sensitive Topics in Education

Parents sometimes become leery when sensitive topics are brought up in their children's classrooms. Many times, this issue comes from inappropriate language or controversial topics that occur in books or movies students are exposed to in school. Parents should remember that these items all revolve around a main storyline that is enhancing the learning for the students. The teacher should briefly address any sensitive topics and questions students may have about them, and parents can do so with their children as well. Parents may have to sign permission slips to allow their child to read a certain book or view a particular movie. Parents should give their children permission, as if they do not, their child will be missing out on an important part of the curriculum and may feel alienated from his/her peers. Another issue is with sex education. No matter what parents think about this issue, it is important for students to receive education in this area to ensure they make safe decisions. Parents should always address this issue with their child at home as well.
