Kent District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

Kent Public Schools follow the Washington State Standards for English Language Arts, Math and Science. In addition, the district is beginning to implement both the Common Core Standards and the Next Generation Science Standards. The English Language Arts curriculum is designed to assist students in becoming literate participants in 21st century learning challenges. It works cohesively to ensure students know how to both read and write from a range of purposes. Students read and analyze a variety of literary and informational texts, in addition to building on their mechanical abilities with the language and written expression. The literacy goals are also written so that they assist students in all their subject-area learning.

Chalk Talk: Developing Public Speaking Skills

Many have experienced the nerves that happen before giving a speech, there are ways to help a child overcome this. First of all, help them identify the theme that is to be covered in the speech and then look for evidence that it truly is. This will help to build confidence in the material. Then pull in some friends that will have the same assignment. Ask each one to practice before the others. This will give the child familiar faces to focus on when giving the speech in class, plus the more practice they have in front of an audience, the more the fears will disappear. Part of public speaking includes knowing how to give and receive feedback. Gently, ask the child some information about what they are talking about and then tell them good things and constructive help regarding their speech. Finally, practice taking a deep breath, or two, before giving the speech to clear the mind and calm the nerves. Help them receive a good night’s sleep, a good breakfast and wish them good luck.
