Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Novi District Curriculum
Core curriculum standards are diverse; for example, in the third grade Science curriculum students are expected to understand the structures of living things, changes in light and motion, earth materials and a bevy of other scientific basics. By the time they reach fifth grade, the students are expected to be able to understand scientific measurements and apply them to motions, they should be able to understand basic evolution of animals and organisms and other scientific ideas.
Math students in fifth grade will have to be able to demonstrate their knowledge of multiplication of fractions, with unlike denominators and divide, add and subtract the same, and a slew of other mathematical knowledge. In English, reading, writing and structure is also all taught so that students understand the craft of literature and how to put together a well-written essay of their own analytic thoughts. Outlining is a skill that is taught and students are expected to use during their education.

Chalk Talk: Tutors and Teachers
Teachers are some of the most influential people in a child's life. They affect much of the learning that a child demonstrates. The ratio's in public schools averages about 1 teacher per 25 students. It can be very difficult for a child that is struggling with a subject to get the individual attention that they need to overcome the struggle with those ratios. A tutor can work hand and hand with the teacher to help the child gain a better understanding of the subject matter. It truly does take a village to raise a child both inside and outside the school system.
