The Common Core State Standards were adopted and implemented for the 2012-13 school year. The curriculum follows and incorporates those standards. We currently cover the following Kernersville-area school district: Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System.
Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Kernersville District Curriculum
The WSFCS elementary schools utilize self-contained classes, and establish a strong foundation in reading even at the lowest grade levels, as it is essential for success in the other core classes. The middle schools ease the transition to departmentalized classes and teaching, and enhance basic skills while providing more rigorous courses and an opportunity to discover more specialized interests in computers and technology, languages, or music and art.
The curriculum of the high schools allows students to choose from a comprehensive array of classes and programs, including advanced science and math classes, world languages, and theater classes. There are about thirty vocational programs offered through the Career Center, and many Advanced Placement classes, several dual-enrollment courses with local colleges, and an International Baccalaureate Programme. Students are expected to develop independence in their academic pursuits and connect learning to their personal interests.

Keeping Informed: Recent Kernersville Educational News
- 3, 2, 1 Lego! - In a twist, students were coaching adults, and Lego Mindstorm robots were the tools. Adults from community businesses and institutions used a recent Friday morning to learn from fifth-and sixth-graders how to program and operate programmable robots made from Legos plus arms, wheels, and other add-ons that will enable the robots to perform different tasks, like picking up items or “turning on” a made-from-Legos TV. Students enjoyed the opportunity to be in charge and build friendships in a nontraditional way.
- Flying a Plane Is Kid Stuff - The 2013 Tom Davis Aviation Career Education Academy provided 36 middle-school students the chance to do more than just ride in a commercial airliner—these kids actually helped fly an airplane, a Cessna 172. The pilot experience was the culmination of a week’s study in aviation careers, which also included riding in a helicopter, visiting the NC Transportation Museum, and building small airplanes and rockets.
- College & Career Award for Parkland High - ACT recognized Parkland HS as its second-place winner of the national College and Career Transition Award for the school’s achievements. Parkland had already won the state award of this type for North Carolina. ACT is a nonprofit organization probably most well-known for the ACT college entrance exam, but that test is only a portion of its campaign for college and career readiness.

Chalk Talk: Vocabulary is Essential
Vocabulary words aren’t just for English or language arts classes! The key element and the most basic tool for any subject is the vocabulary you will find there. Without it, you’ll be facing a handicap in the rest of the material. Make the new terminology a priority, and the rest of the information and concepts will be easier. You can’t grasp the idea of when to apply a quadratic equation, for example, if you don’t know what a quadratic equation is. You won’t know why manifest destiny helped America grow unless you know what manifest destiny is. Create flash cards or draw pictures to help you remember the meaning of the new words and terms you find; master the vocabulary before you go any further.
