Educating Our Parents: Understanding the Ketchikan District Curriculum

The inquiry-based science curriculum involves students in learning how to solve problems scientifically and to use scientific thinking to analyze the world around them. Ketchikan’s location provides an exceptional laboratory and science teachers are able to take advantage of educational programs offered by the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center.

The Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District offers a comprehensive English/Language Arts curriculum. Learning to read is a priority is lower elementary grades and reading to learn is core to upper elementary grades. As students gain proficiency in reading and writing, they move to exploration of contemporary and classic literature, creative writing, and journalism. The different core subjects help students learn processes for discovery, problem-solving, and communication which prepares students for the next step in their educational and career journey.

Ketchikan District Curriculum Used in Our In-Home Tutoring Programs

The Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District curriculum is aligned to Alaska’s State Content and Performance Standards and Grade Level Expectations (GLEs). These curricula provide a series of objectives that students need to learn in order to be proficient in their subjects. The math curriculum is designed to help students become independent problem solvers. Students work to understand math facts, theorems, and formulas and learn how they are applicable in everyday life.
