The Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District curriculum is aligned to Alaska’s State Content and Performance Standards and Grade Level Expectations (GLEs). The inquiry-based science curriculum involves students in learning how to solve problems scientifically and to use scientific thinking to analyze the world around them. Ketchikan’s location provides an exceptional laboratory and science teachers are able to take advantage of educational programs offered by the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center.
The Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District offers a comprehensive English/Language Arts curriculum. Learning to read is a priority is lower elementary grades and reading to learn is core to upper elementary grades. As students gain proficiency in reading and writing, they move to exploration of contemporary and classic literature, creative writing, and journalism. The different core subjects help students learn processes for discovery, problem-solving, and communication which prepares students for the next step in their educational and career journey.
