Sullivan County Schools uses a “Curriculum-at-a-Glance” website, to keep students, teachers and stakeholders informed of standards and expectations of students at every grade level. The use of the TEL (Tennessee Electronic Library), has improved access to standards by all involved, and leads to valuable reflection, discussion and problem-solving to support students in a rich learning experience. On the Sullivan County homepage, you can find not only standards for each grade level, but sample lesson plans for each level.

Keeping Informed: Recent Kingsport Educational News

  • Summer Food Programs - Summer food programs help so many families who would normally qualify for the free lunch program, and most school districts provide summer lunch programs to those families. Kingsport City Schools is going beyond that, partnered with USDA, by offering free meals (breakfast and lunch) during the summer to anyone under 18, regardless of income. This not only provides a regular time and place for kids to eat during the summer, but it also provides social time in a positive environment.
  • Summer R.O.C.K.S. - The Summer R.O.C.K.S. program is an internet-based program that is designed to help students prepare for the next year of school. Most kids are curious about how they will do in the next grade level, and this gives them a chance to get a glimpse. They see which skills they will need to review, if any, and they start the next school year aware and ready for the subjects they will be studying. The courses that students can take are interactive, which promote learning in fun ways, and building a positive attitude about school.
  • Newsweek Best High Schools List - Newsweek has named Dobyns-Bennett High School in its exclusive list of America’s Best High Schools. The schools on this list have performed exceedingly well on criteria like graduation rates, acceptance into colleges and universities, and AP class offerings. With constant fine-tuning in how teaching and learning occur, these schools are model schools for others who are striving for similar results.

Chalk Talk: Helping Kids Transition Schools

No matter what age your children are, going to a new school is not easy. A new school might be something you decided on with your child, within the same district, or it might be because of a move. Either way, even if your children are excited about the new school, it’s not always easy. It can be challenging as a child and as a parent, when your children don’t want to switch schools, but try to focus on the positive and find out what is producing the most anxiety regarding the move. If your children are attending a new school within the same area, you might want to check out the summer programs offered at the new school. Your children will make some friends before school starts and feel more comfortable with “starting over.” If you’ve relocated within the area, visit local parks, swimming pools and other community centers where your children can meet possible schoolmates.
