Chalk Talk: Sharing Time
Sharing time is important in the classroom, as it allows students to share their work with others and gain different perspectives from their peers. Some students may be uncomfortable sharing their work, but if teachers make it a routine activity in their classroom and create an environment of respect that lacks judgment, students can become more self-confident and even enthusiastic about their work. A great time for teachers to incorporate sharing time is during writer's workshops, and it is in fact recommended in the procedure. Also, it is beneficial for teachers to incorporate sharing time during math so that students can share the work they did to come up with answers to problems and explain how and why they did it their way. Teachers can ask students who solved the problem in different ways to share so that students learn and understand multiple ways to solve the problem. Teachers should make sure to give students equal opportunity to share their work.
